A Short History of the Farms and Dairies in Wahkiakum County
Wahkiakum County has a long history of crop farming, dairying, and locker beef.
At one point, there were over 80 dairies! Through the 1950's, the Skamokawa Creamery
was a leader in selling whole milk, butter, and cream to markets on the Columbia River as "far away" as Astoria.
The traditions of grass-fed, free-range, and organic farming continue to thrive in Wahkiakum
County - on family farms in Cathlamet, Skamokawa, and Puget Island. Local farmers and CSA's sell a wide
range of locally grown food and meat items, including fresh chicken eggs, pork, lamb, goat, grass-finished beef,
pastured poultry, turkey and geese raised cage-free, fresh fruits, dairy, vegetables, and beautiful flowers!
